Connecting distinguished research-oriented universities with four curricula clusters, IACS-UST offers an ideal environment for students who are interested in the socio-historical-political-cultural studies of Asia in the global context.
Inter-Asia/Gender/Sexuality, Colonial/Modernities, Post/Cold war de-colonial critiques and practices
Inter-Asia gender/sexuality studies attends to the dynamism of social differentiation (class, race, age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, religion, etc.) and their intersectionality in changing contexts. We strive toward alternative routes than a hegemonic Anglophone and its moral progressivism, as these continue to underwrite regional theorization and knowledge production. We are interested in figurations of gender/sexuality in the Post/Cold-War Asian contexts that arise in assonance and dissonance with multiple historical formations of empire, colonialism, and modernities.

Visual Culture
Being the first Institute devoted to visual studies in Taiwan, we aim to break the traditional academic boundaries among photography studies, film studies, history of art, visual sociology, technology studies and so on. Our research focuses on the modern period from the 17th century to present, seeking to integrate studies of Asian, Sinophone (including Taiwanese, Hong Kong, and Chinese) and European/American visual cultures. Providing Taiwan academia with an innovative methodology that incorporates these major visual cultures, the Institute aspires to face up to the age of visual cultures. It provides the society with talents mastering visual cultures that are much needed nowadays, and connects with the global trend where notable academic institutions for studies have been set up continually.
