Introduction

A forgotten history of World War II written

for the Sixth Fuel Factory, and those who are forgotten but do exist

The serial publications of Living Metaphor﹒Living Museum are the result National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University's implementation of the following projects: "Regeneration of Historic Sites" initiated by the Ministry of Culture and the Good Neighborliness Residency Project of the Sixth Fuel as well as Hsinchu Living Museum under the Higher Education SPROUT Project of the Ministry of Education. Starting from 2018, the NYCU team has made efforts to unfold the issue related to the preservation and revitalization of "Japanese Navy's Sixth Fuel Factory Hsinchu Branch"(the Sixth Fuel Factory thereafter).

TransArt NYCU cooperated with Post Theater of Germany to produce two theatrical works-- For-giving, For-getting and Nonuments, in which fifty artists from Taiwan and abroad worked together to display interdisciplinary creations related to the Sixth Fuel Factory in WWII. This became one of the key points in Hsinchu Living Museum. This book with the record of the whole performance, research theses, and the two scripts not only collects the content of the entire project but also can be the contemplation of the artistic display.

Introduction

A trilogy unfolded by memories, plants and maps adds layers of artistic practices on the texture of the Sixth Fuel Hsinchu

Wen-Shu LAI, the Associate Professor of Applied Arts at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, has executed the project of "Big Chimney Base," the Good Neighborliness Residency Project of the Sixth Fuel Hsinchu, for more than three years since 2018. She points out that Hsinchu is a city with WWII experience and needs a group of citizens with reflecting, critical and practicing abilities to preserve, revitalize and nurture the city. Encountering/Foreseeing the Sixth Fuel Factory: Solo Art Installations by Wen-Shu Lai exhibited under the big chimney was the concrete practice of the action.

Encountering/Foreseeing the Sixth Fuel Factory is a journey for lives to coverage again. The path to the chimney like the umbilical cord connecting the mother and child is a construction intending to open up the living metaphors and history of the Sixth Fuel Factory through artistic action. By gradually unfolding the path at a trilogy-like pace with memories, plants, and maps, art practices are endowed to the texture of the Sixth Fuel Factory. The multiple deployment intertwining and penetrating one another intertextually extends the plates of the Sixth Fuel Factory in personal life. Seven exhibited works are the creases of life when individuals encounter history and memories. However, these life creases are not so much personal as collective. They are the crystal of historical memories when people assemble and are our dedication to the big chimney.

Introduction

Only when the history, the people's life and the contemporary meanings are sincerely responded does the Sixth Fuel Factory get the value for its very existence

"The Sixth Fuel Documenta is not so much for studying the Sixth Fuel Factory as for understanding how meanings disappear and are reconstructed in the passing time and for how we remember, govern and construct the Sixth Fuel Factory."—— Wen-Shu LAI

"The Sixth Fuel Factory in Motion" not only offers the imagination of "the Museum in Motion" but also the motif of The Sixth Fuel Documenta 2022. Motion is not so much the breaking of fixed points as the transposition of selves beyond the frames. It is the shift of cognition, thought, and paradigm, as well as the advance of history, action, and discourse. The Documenta features four sections: the good-neighboring Sixth Fuel Factory, the towering Sixth Fuel Factory, the mobile Sixth Fuel Factory, and a decentralized museum. It discusses six kinds of movement including the sustainable life, local texture, cultural heritage interpretation, governance strategy, historical writing and museum paradigm to ponder the possibility of the Sixth Fuel Factory as a decentralized and distributed museum. The Documenta attempts to progressively establish a localogical knowledge system and a living museum framework for the Sixth Fuel Factory by means of transdisciplinary artistic praxis, sustainable life design, smart technology-based conservation, field trip and flâneuring, localogical lectures on the Sixth Fuel Factory and museum workshops. By clarifying the context of the culture and history of the Sixth Fuel Factory, the contemporary value and position of the Sixth Fuel Factory as the WWII industrial remains will be exposed. When the Japanese Navy's Sixth Fuel Factory and the high-tech industry in Taiwan are connected, the umbilical cord relationship will be revealed. The lives, beings and the produced new meanings under the global context will shine. The Sixth Fuel Factory will be given the cultural path and dynamic system of Living Metaphor﹒Living Museum.
