Professor Joyce C.H. Liu, Professor Emerita at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, currently serves as the Director of the International Center for Cultural Studies at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Director of the International Center for Cultural Studies and the Interdisciplinary Program in Cultural Studies at Taiwan United University. She is also an appointed professor in the International Program in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies.

Professor Liu obtained her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Illinois, USA, in 1984. She has made significant contributions to various fields, including Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Psychoanalysis, Critical Theory, Visual Culture, Asian Modernity, and Interdisciplinary Social Critique. Her current research interests and course offerings focus on topics such as Biopolitics, Border Politics, Internal Colonialism, Inequality Citizenship, Community and
Identity Contradictions, Decolonization of Knowledge, and Artistic Activism. 

Professor Liu previously served as the Chair of the English Department at Fu Jen Catholic University from 1988 to 1993 and founded Taiwan's first Comparative Literature Institute at the same university in 1994, serving as its founding director from 1994 to 1999. In 2002, she joined established the Graduate Institute of Social Research and Cultural Studies, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, where she served as the director for a total of 11 years (2002-2004, 2008-2011, 2013-2019). During her service as the Chair of the Cultural Studies Association, Taiwan, she founded the international journal "Router: A Journal for Cultural Studies" and served as its editor-in-chief from 2011 to 2017. In 2013, she established the International Institute for Cultural Studies, the University System of Taiwan, and the interdisciplinary "International Program in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies," serving as the director and program coordinator to the present day.

Professor Liu's notable monographs include seven books: The Topology of the History of Mentalities: How to Face the Contemporary? How to Comprehend the History? (2023), One Divides into Two: Philosophical Archaeology of Modern Chinese Political Thought (2020), The Topology of Psyche: The Post-1895 Reconstruction of Ethics (2011), The Perverted Heart: The Psychic Forms of Modernity (2004), Orphan, Goddess, and the Writing of the Negative: The
Performance of Our Symptoms (2000), Literature and Film: Image, Reality, and Cultural Critique (2003), and Eight Essays on Literature and the Other Arts: Intertextuality, Counterpoint and Cultural Interpretation (1994). In addition to these, she has authored over a hundred articles in both Chinese and English academic journals, edited 19 volumes of academic books, and translated works such as An Introductory Dictionary of Lacanian Psychoanalysis (Dylan Evans) and
Disagreement: Politics and Philosophy (Jacques Rancière).

Professor Liu has received numerous academic honors and awards, including the Ministry of Science and Technology Outstanding Research Award (2020), the National Science Council Humanistic Studies Center Publication Award (2020, 2011, 2004), a full scholarship from the Fulbright Foundation as a visiting scholar (1994), and exchanges with Harvard University's Comparative Literature Program (1994). She has also held the position of Taiwan Chair Professor at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic (2002) and at the University of Delhi, India (2017). She delivered a lecture at the UCLA Center for Chinese Studies in 2019.

In recent years, Professor Liu has organized several large-scale interdisciplinary international research projects, including the Ministry of Education's In-Depth Research Center Program in Conflict, Justice, and Decolonization: Critical Studies of Inter-Asian Societies (2018-2022), Conflict, Justice, and Decolonization: Asia in Transition in the 21st Century (2023-2027), the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI), and the A.W. Mellon Foundation-funded Global Humanities Institute (GHI) in Migration, Logistics and Unequal Citizens in Contemporary Global Context (2019-2022). She also established the Transit Asia Research Network (TARN), an organization that brings together over ten academic research institutions in Asia and Europe to promote collaborative cross-regional research.

To actively promote international academic cooperation, Professor Liu has organized 28 domestic and international academic conferences and workshops, and the proceedings of many of these events have been published by renowned publishers both domestically and internationally. Some of the titles include East-Asian Marxisms and their Trajectories (Routledge 2017), European-East Asian Borders in Translation (Routledge 2014), and Biopolitics, Ethics and Subjectivation (Paris: L'Harmattan, 2011).

Throughout her career, Professor Liu has supervised 28 Ph.D. dissertations and 58 master’s theses, with students coming from various countries, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Italy, Belgium, Palestine, Uzbekistan, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, and others.
